Few would argue that Times Square is considered the heartbeat of New York City. Due to the pulsating atmosphere and floodlit neon lights, Times Square has been rejuvenated over the past twenty years, and is now one of New York's favourite destinations. However, this hasn't always been the case. Omitting Broadway shows, Times Square was a no-go zone, plagued by sordid residents and stores alike. Not anymore...
Times Square History
Formally conceived in the 1830's by the prosperous Astor family as an affluent neighbourhood, Times Square got it's name when the now well known New York Times setup home there sometime during 1906. Times Square grew further in popularity when the subways where extended to 42nd Street. New York City's theatre owners uprooted home from lower Manhattan, thereby selling-out seventy-six theatres by late 1928 with the move to Broadway.
With the onset of World War II, families would visit a Broadway show, grab something to eat and return home without concern. Thankfully, that's true again today, due to a wide-spread development of the area during the 1990's. Visitors are growing in numbers year-on-year thanks largely to the many theatres on Broadway, shops and quality dinning that Times Square is now famous for.
Toys R US Times Square
Not to be outdone, Disney relocated, as well did Toys "R" Us. The popular children's toy store even houses an indoor Ferris Wheel; ideal for entertaining the Grandchildren or kids. Nearby, Virgin Megastore is close at hand for all those teenagers and music or film buffs. Well worth a visit too is Times Square Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, along with the unconventional Hershey shop.
Discounted Broadway Tickets
You can't go to Times Square New York without taking in a Broadway show. Just be careful you don't spend too much on tickets as prices can be heavily inflated. A good source of cheap Broadway Tickets can be found at 47th Street first. The outdoor tellers will often sell last minute discounted Broadway tickets at a fraction of their retail price; with discounts of up to 50%. So make sure you visit early and grab yourself a Broadway bargain...
Whats In Times Square
With so many people tightly packed into Times Square New York at any one time, police presence is heavy, and for obvious reasons. Still, safety is of paramount importance and you feel steadily reassured and safe at all times. Make sure you check out the ultra-modern police station on your sightseeing visit of Times Square. You will also likely stumble across the many speed chess players, mime artists and street performers that are well worth watching.
As you would expect there are plentiful dinning and award winning restaurants sprawled throughout. If you're after a quick snack then Planet Hollywood and Burger King will suffice. Moving upmarket, the Italian Times Square restaurant at Carla Mia is highly recommended. There's even a Brazilian fare situated at Brazil Grill between 47th and 8th Avenue. If you like your steak then this is definitely the place to dine.
Things To Do In Times Square
Other attractions in Times Square, or not too far away, are the Rockefeller Center, The CBS Building and a whole host of other modern wonders that make for an extremely satisfying day of sightseeing.
When you visit Times Square New York make time to reflect at massive sign at One Times Square. This is where it all happens on New Year's Eve, and that sparkly illuminated orb is dropped at the stroke of midnight... This has been a ritual since the NY Times opened its doors in 1906-1907.
So make sure you take in all the sights that Times Square has to offer and try to get hold of some cheap Broadway tickets from 47th Street. Only then will you really appreciate all that Time Square has to offer.
