Funeral Arrangements
Many people who take out life insurance do so in order to offer their loved ones financial protection in the event of their death. Dealing with the passing away of a loved one can be a traumatic experience, and whilst life insurance cannot alleviate any of the emotional difficulties, it can, at least help to ensure that the beneficiaries are cared for financially.
One thing that many people find particularly difficult is handling the organisation and costs of a funeral. If an estate is held up in probate, for example, the family of the deceased may have to pay for the costs of a funeral out of their own pocket, which, in the current economic climate in particular, may well be difficult.
For that reason, some insurance providers are now offering funeral insurance plans. These are relatively cheap insurance policies which have no face value, but rather cover all the costs associated with a funeral in the event of the policyholder's death. In such an event, it is simply a case of calling the insurance company to notify them and all the plans will be put in motion, saving the family the worry of affording a service.
Another advantage of such a plan is that you can prepare for your own funeral. One company who provide such a service, Legal & General, offer a system where you can discuss details with a funeral director.
Of course there are a few extra considerations. With a funeral plan policy there is no face value, and if you live a long and healthy life you may pay more into the policy than the insurance company will pay in the event of your passing. From that point of view it may be better financially to invest in a life insurance policy that has a funeral expenses option, rather than to pay for a funeral plan directly.
Ultimately, the choice is entirely down to the policyholder. There are a lot of life insurance plans available that cater specifically for those over the age of 50, and many include funeral provisions, but the opportunity to have everything already dealt with can be a weight off the mind of the policyholder and of the family. If you are considering a life insurance policy, make sure you take some time to look at several different options, and don't be afraid to ask the insurance companies concerned if there is anything you are not sure about. If you are looking for further details regarding insurance for and around this sensitive issue, check out the Legal & General Website for details about their funeral plans.
